Galvanize Podcast shines a light on sheffield's commissioned metal landmarks
Local Sheffield company, Silverworks, is using pioneering technology to promote a new festival of contemporary metal design and innovation called Galvanize Sheffield. As from 9th November 2007, festival-goers and visitors to Sheffield will be able to download the Galvanize Podcast on their phones and mp3 players, for a mobile guide to the city's contemporary metalwork sculpture which forms a key element within Sheffield urban regeneration.With a Podcast download point located at Sheffield Station, visitors to the city will be able to download a 5 minute version of the digital media as they step off the train for an instant introduction to the city and the festival. Alternatively, a 20 minute version will be available to download from the Galvanize Sheffield website (www.galvanizesheffield.com). Narrated by BBC Radio 4's Nicola Barranger, the tour will lead from Sheffield Station to the heart of the City centre, highlighting key metalwork pieces along the way.
This will be the first time that this pioneering technology has been used to promote an event in this way and it aims to make the festival more accessible for people on the go. The Podcast will provide an insight into the Cutting Edge sculpture designed by silversmiths Chris Knight, Brett Payne and Keith Tyssen, as well as incorporating some of the city's metalwork hotspots, including the Metalwork Collection within the, Millennium Galleries; Millennium Square; Peace Gardens and the Town Hall Civic Collection.
Galvanize Sheffield is a new annual festival, running from 14th November - 9th December 2007, which aims to spark new interest in contemporary metal design whist celebrating some of the Sheffield's home-grown talent from the vibrant metalwork industry. The festival will be a perfect opportunity to see and purchase metal work, meet contemporary designers and learn about the making process and latest innovations.
