Corin Mellor's new Advent Wreath is unveiled at Sheffield Cathedral

A new metalwork piece has been commissioned for Sheffield Cathedral as part of the annual Galvanize Sheffield: Festival of Contemporary Metal Design and Innovation. The new Advent Wreath has been created by Sheffield-born metalwork designer, Corin Mellor, and will be unveiled to the public on Thursday 22nd November 2007 for the first time.

Inspired by the Cathedral's striking architecture, the Wreath promises to be a stunning addition to the Cathedral's collection. Although traditional in design, with four candles standing at equal distant points in a circle around a fifth candle in the centre, the Advent Wreath has been created out of stainless steel - a contemporary material with particular associations with Sheffield. A candle will be lit each Sunday starting from 2 December, with the central candle being lit on Christmas Day.

Peter Bradley, the Dean of Sheffield Cathedral commented:

"We are thrilled to be taking part in the Galvanize Sheffield festival, and are very excited about our new Advent Wreath, which offers a contemporary and stylish perspective on the church's tradition. We look forward to using it in our worship during the season of Advent for many years to come."

Galvanize Sheffield is a new, annual festival that aims to spark new interest in contemporary metal design whist celebrating some of the city's home-grown talent from the vibrant metalwork industry. It is the perfect opportunity to see and purchase metal work, meet contemporary designers and learn about the making process and latest innovations. This year's festival focuses on contemporary metal lifestyle products including jewellery, kitchen equipment, cutlery, tools and creative pieces for the home. There are exhibitions, factory tours, talks and demonstrations taking place in over 20 venues.
