Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1991 Maria Hanson has been continuously involved within the subject of Silversmithing and Jewellery both as an Academic and as a Designer/maker. She has also been involved with many external organisations during the past 16 years and was an executive committee member (Treasurer) of the Association for Contemporary Jewellery from the inauguration in 1997 until 2001.She became a freeman of the Goldsmiths' Company and the City of London in June 2006.

Maria has lectured in various Universities since 1994 including Course Director for the BA (hons) in Silversmithing and Jewellery at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham. She took up her current post as Reader in Metalwork and Jewellery at Sheffield Hallam University in 2003. She is also represents the university as a founder member of the Galvanize Sheffield Steering group.

Maria has participated in many national and international exhibitions, which include 6 solo shows. Her current work crosses between contemporary studio jewellery and small scale domestic and ceremonial objects. Maria's work can be seen in a number of public collections, including the Crafts Council and the National Museums of Scotland. Her work is now highly regarded and through the many international exhibitions, pieces have been purchased for private collections in Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Belgium and The USA.
